FAST FACTS

Fast Fact

Fiber helps regulate the body’s use of sugars, helping to keep hunger and blood sugar in check. Children and adults need at least 25 to 35 grams of fiber per day for good health, but most Americans get only about 15 grams a day.

Fast Fact

Prebiotics supports the immune system by increasing the population of beneficial microbes such as lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria, in the gut

Fast Fact

When our gut bacteria break down fiber, they produce short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Humans can digest SCFAs for energy, and a symbiotic relationship between the digestive system and our colon’s microbiome ensues. Ultimately, for every gram of fiber we consume, we receive two calories of energy in the form of SCFAs.

Fast Fact

Prebiotics are essential for healthy bacteria to thrive within your digestive tract and to ease bloating.

Fast Fact

When prebiotics is broken down by the microorganisms in your gut, different short-chain fatty acids are created depending on the kind of prebiotic. As a result, these short-chain fatty acids do a number of things like provide energy to your colon cells, help with mucus production, and aid in inflammation and immunity.

Fast Fact

Prebiotic foods are high in special types of fiber that support digestive health. They promote the increase of friendly bacteria in the gut, help with various digestive problems, and even boost your immune system.

INGREDIENTS

Fibersol -2

Maize Fiber

Probiotic

Prebiotics like Fibersol-2 is also a vital source of ‘food’ for gut bacteria. This helps them to produce beneficial substances like short-chain fatty acids, which strengthen the physical gut barrier and regulate the immune response.

A healthy gut also ensures that nutrients are properly absorbed.

Gut Health

NUTRIOSE

Wheat Fiber

Probiotic

Nutriose is a soluble fiber that assists with gut health and contributes to satiety after meals and the support of blood sugar levels.

Gut Health

Inavea

Acacia Fiber

Probiotic

Inavea Pure Acacia is an all-natural, organic and GMO-free prebiotic ingredient sourced from carefully selected acacia trees.  Prebiotics provide a source of food for your gut bacteria.

PRODUCT INFORMATION

Fiber is a very interesting nutrient. Unlike other macronutrients, which yield energy, the human body isn’t actually able to digest or absorb fiber. Instead, the fiber passes through the intestine, undigested until it reaches the large intestine where it feeds the bacteria that live there (aka your microbiome). It’s vital that this happens because it appears that the microbiome has a marked impact on our overall health and the by-products that they produce can also be very beneficial.

Unfortunately, most people don’t have enough fiber in their diet and teens are no exception. In general, children aged 11-16 years should get around 25 grams fiber/ day and those over the age of 16 should be getting closer to 30 grams /day (&).

Generally speaking there are 2 forms of fiber, insoluble and soluble. Insoluble (or ‘hard’ fiber) is the kind found in the skin of fruits and vegetables or in high fiber wholegrains (think bran) and is needed to help form a bulky stool (meaning it has a higher weight and size) which passes more frequently. Soluble fiber (or ‘soft’ fiber) on the other hand, is found in the flesh of fruits and vegetables or certain grains, like oats, and legumes. It absorbs water to form a gel, which makes the stool soft and easy to pass. Some soluble fibers are known to be prebiotic, meaning that they are the ones that feed the microbiome. It’s these kinds of fibers that we have included in Bioteen’s Fiber Boost, providing teens with 5 grams of prebiotic fiber from Fibersol-2 (maize), Nutriose (wheat) and Inavea (acacia) in a convenient powder format that can be added to any drink or shake.

Let’s have a look at all the benefits you can expect from including these fibers on a regular basis:

Prebiotics feed your microbiome

As we mentioned, your microbiome is the population of microbes that live in your gut. Generally, there is a mix of good and bad microbes, and the goal is to help the good outnumber the bad because dysbiosis (which is what it is called when the bad are allowed to ‘run free’) is associated with a number of diseases. The way that you encourage the growth of the good bacteria (which usually fall into the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium families) is by feeding them the right kind of prebiotic fibers. Some prebiotic fibers, like the ones in Bioteen’s Fiber Boost, are fermented more readily than others, which means that they are more effective at feeding these beneficial microbes.

Prebiotics support immune health

Prebiotic foods (or supplements, like Bioteen’s Fiber Boost), bypass digestion and absorption in your small intestines and make their way to the colon where they do two main things. Firstly they physically prevent pathogens from binding to the lining of the gut by tricking the pathogens into thinking that they are gut cells. When this happens, the pathogen binds to the prebiotic instead of the gut cell and is then flushed from the system. And secondly, they are fermented and essentially ‘feed’ the good microbiota. The end-products of this fermentation process are called short chain fatty acids (SCFA) which strengthen the epithelial layer by increasing the secretion of mucus, acting as an energy source for epithelial cells and maintaining tight junction proteins (2). A thicker mucus layer blocks pathogens, well fed epithelial cells are able to proliferate and function at capacity and well maintained tight junctions seal the epithelial cells together and reinforce the physical barrier. SCFAs also influence the intestinal immune cells of the GALT (or gut associated lymphoid tissue) and act as mediators between your gut bacteria and your immune system. The signals that they produce are able to modulate your immune response helping to maintain the anti/pro-inflammatory balance (3). In short, you want plenty of SCFAs due to the multiple beneficial effects that they have on the gut and the body as a whole.

Prebiotics are a source of energy

Short chain fatty acids have another function, just like fats in our diet they are able to act as an energy source. Ultimately, for every gram of fiber we consume, we receive two calories of energy in the form of SCFAs. Depending on the amount of fiber in the diet, this can make up for as much as 10% of the energy in the diet (^)! However, if you are concerned that this additional energy is a recipe for weight gain, it isn’t. Instead of being ‘empty calories’, fiber (and more specifically prebiotic fibers have been shown to increase feelings of fullness (&, %)and also have the ability to help regulate blood sugars ($) (meaning potentially fewer blood sugar spikes and dips, which translates into a stable energy supply).

Prebiotics can help to prevent constipation

One of the most common functions of fiber is the role that it plays in supporting good bathroom habits. As we mentioned above, insoluble fiber forms the bulk of the stool and soluble fiber absorbs fluids, making the stool soft and easy to pass. In some research, prebiotic fibers have been shown to be an effective treatment for idiopathic constipation (which is when the cause of the constipation is not necessarily linked to a disease state, or the cause is unknown). Not only has it been shown to improve stool consistency, but it can also increase the number of bowel movements and reduce bloating (@).

The bottom line

At the end of the day, most people need to include more fiber in their diet. Bioteen’s Fiber Boost is a great way to boost your teen’s fiber intake with specialized prebiotic fibers that have been proven to be easily fermented by the beneficial microbes in the gut. Gone are the days when we thought fiber was only good for going to the bathroom, we now know better and understand that having a healthy microbiome can have far reaching effects, some of which we are only now starting to understand. Give your teen the best gut health start possible with Bioteen’s Fiber Boost.
