FAST FACTS

Fast Fact

Keeping your immune system healthy year-round is key to preventing infection and disease.

Fast Fact

Glycine intake increases the reinforcement potential of the body’s connective tissues, which may conceivably impede the advance of invasive agents (viruses or bacteria), thereby enhancing the capability of the immune system to repel such invasive agents.

Fast Fact

Electrolytes are minerals that are essential for your body to function. They help regulate your pH levels and muscles, keep you hydrated, and more. Therefore, consuming enough electrolytes in your diet is important for your health.

Fast Fact

When your body becomes low on electrolytes, it can impair your body’s functions, such as blood clotting, muscle contractions, acid balance, and fluid regulation.

Fast Fact

B5 or pantothenic acid helps the hair, skin, and even lowers cholesterol. But B5 is also vital for energy. B5 works with added B vitamins to convert food into energy. The more B5 present, the greater the energy conversion. Like B12, B5 helps red blood cell creation and metabolic health.

Fast Fact

Vitamin B1 or thiamine is a water-soluble vitamin in fish, whole grains and nuts. Thiamine converts carbohydrates and fats into glucose. Glucose provides the energy needed for optimal health. A B1 supplement can provide improved energy. A B1 deficiency not only means low energy but reduced brain and nervous system function.

Fast Fact

One of the most common early signs of vitamin B12 deficiency is fatigue or lack of energy. Vitamin B12 is involved in energy production in your body. Taking a supplement may improve your energy level, but only if you’re deficient in this vitamin.

Fast Fact

Research shows vitamin C is essential for the growth and repair of tissue all over the body. Vitamin C helps heal wounds and repair and maintain healthy bones, teeth, skin and cartilage.

Vitamin C

Immunity/Energy

Vitamin C is necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues. It’s involved in many body functions, including the formation of collagen, absorption of iron, the proper functioning of the immune system, wound healing, and the maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth. Vitamin C contributes to immune defense by supporting various cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune systems.

Hydration

Getting enough electrolytes is essential to maintaining a healthy body.  Electrolytes are minerals that are essential for your body to function. They help regulate your pH levels and muscles, keep you hydrated, and more.

Electrolytes are vital for the healthy functioning of the human body and include sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous, all found in Bioteen’s Vitamin C 1000.

B-Vitamins

Vitamin B Complex

Energy/Vitality

For teens in particular, B vitamins help to support skin and immune health, the nervous system, stress response, and energy levels. Our bodies deplete B vitamins more quickly in times of stress, and signs of this depletion may include fatigue, irritability, weakness, digestive issues, and anemia.

Vitamin B-12 is one of eight B vitamins that help the body convert the food you eat into glucose, which gives you energy.

PRODUCT INFORMATION

At Bioteen we understand how good nutrition can support your teen’s active lifestyle, from making sure they have the energy to stay on top of their game to steering clear of the sniffles. This means eating a healthy and varied diet, but can also include taking the right kinds of supplements that target various pathways to tip the scales in your teen’s favor.

As each teen’s needs are unique, we have developed a range of all-in-one and stand-alone products so that your teen is getting exactly what they need when they need it. Our Vitamin C 1000 blend (which contains vitamin C, zinc, vitamin B complex, hydrating electrolytes and glycine) is for those teens who are on the run, want to feel their best and don’t have time to get sick. Let’s explore how it gets this done.

Immune system support

Vitamin C is the flagship ingredient in this product and with good reason because it supports the immune system in a number of ways. Its main claim to fame is that it acts as a potent antioxidant. It stabilizes free radicals neutralizing them before they are able to damage healthy surrounding cells. It does this when you are healthy, but also when there is additional inflammation when you are sick. This not only protects healthy cells from getting damaged, but also protects immune cells, meaning that there are more, healthier cells to tackle the threat. To add to this antioxidant support, we have also included glycine which is an amino acid that is necessary for the synthesis of the powerful antioxidant, glutathione (1).

Vitamin C also accumulates in certain immune cells, like phagocytes where it helps to improve movement (chemotaxis) and the ability of the cell to engulf foreign substances (phagocytosis) which ultimately increases the cell’s ability to neutralize pathogenic threats (2). In addition to this, vitamin C is also a co-factor for various enzymes that support the production of collagen. Collagen is one of the main components of the extracellular matrix that makes up the physical barriers of the innate immune system, like your skin and mucosal membranes in your gut. If you don’t have enough vitamin C in your diet, the collagen won’t be able to renew and regenerate fast enough leaving your body exposed to attack by pathogens (3).

Supply cofactors for energy and neurotransmitter production

Besides keeping the immune system in tip top shape, Bioteen’s Vitamin C 1000 also contains a number of vitamins that act as cofactors, including vitamin B complex and our star, vitamin C. Cofactors are nutrients that are needed for certain reactions to take place in the body. If these nutrients are deficient in the diet, then those reactions can’t take place and as a result the body starts to suffer.

For example, almost every B-vitamin is involved in at least one if not several steps of the energy-production system within the cell (4). This means that if the diet is deficient in any one of these B-vitamins, energy can’t be released. Many people assume that B-vitamins ‘give’ us energy. The truth is that, like all vitamins, they don’t contain any energy but are necessary for energy to be released. So, if you don’t have enough in your diet, energy levels may be low.

Vitamin C also acts as a cofactor for the molecule carnitine, which is needed for the oxidation of fatty acids. So, in order for the body to access fat for energy, vitamin C is needed. In one study, they found that low vitamin C status may reduce fat use for energy during submaximal exercise. Interestingly, when the body wasn’t able to access fat during exercise, the participants also felt more fatigued (5).

In addition to being a cofactor for energy production, vitamin B6 is also a cofactor in the synthesis of certain mood and stress regulating neurotransmitters. Some research shows that even a mild deficiency of vitamin B6 can lead to a down regulation in the production of serotonin (your feel-good neurotransmitter) and GABA (your calming neurotransmitter). In addition to this, vitamin B6 also plays a role in brain glucose regulation and ensuring that the brain has enough energy is a crucial part of being able to concentrate and feel great (6).

Hydrating electrolytes

One of the first signs of dehydration is fatigue as well as lack of concentration and irritability. To help teens combat these symptoms of dehydration, we have included electrolytes like potassium and sodium to encourage optimal hydration. Both of these minerals promote hydration, but in slightly different ways with sodium targeting the extracellular compartment and potassium targeting the intracellular one. Maintaining good hydration is always important, but becomes increasingly so when your teen is sweating excessively from exercise (especially if exercising in a hot or humid environment).

The bottom line

As you can see, with Bioteen’s Vitamin C 1000 we have covered as many immune support and energy boosting pathways that we could, all while promoting optimal hydration in the name of good health. This is the perfect mix for an active teen, who is living life to their fullest!
