FAST FACTS

Fast Fact

The human digestive tract contains about 400 different bacterial species that reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and promote a healthy digestive system. And lactic acid producing bacteria are the largest inhabitant group amongst all.

Fast Fact

Probiotics are made up of the good bacteria that live in our bodies. After your child has been on antibiotics, probiotics can help get the gut microbiome back to a healthy balance by putting beneficial bacteria back in as well as providing food for the existing good bacteria to rebuild.

Fast Fact

What Are the Signs You Need Probiotics? Brain fog, decline in memory, or cognitive dysfunction. Abdominal pain, stool changes, or excess gas and bloating. Chronic fatigue and sleep disturbances. Mood disturbances, depression, or anxiety.

Fast Fact

Probiotics are foods or supplements that contain live microorganisms intended to maintain or improve the “good” bacteria (normal microflora) in the body. Prebiotics are foods (typically high-fiber foods) that act as food for human microflora. Prebiotics are used with the intention of improving the balance of these microorganisms.

Fast Fact

Probiotics post antibiotics are beneficial in order to restore some of the healthy bacteria in the intestines that may have been killed. One study showed that probiotics can restore the microbiota to its original state after a disruptive event, such as taking antibiotics.

Fast Fact

Research has revealed that antibiotics have the potential to decimate our gut bacteria. That means that the round you took for your sinus infection could have cut your gut flora down to one-tenth of its previous level. Not by one-tenth, to one-tenth: that’s a 90 percent reduction (Source: NCBI).

Lactospore

Bacilus Probiotics

Probiotic

LactoSpore® is a commercial probiotic preparation containing L(+) lactic acid producing microbial preparation from Bacillus coagulans.  The human digestive tract contains about 400 different bacterial species that reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and promote a healthy digestive system. And lactic acid producing bacteria are the largest inhabitant group amongst all. The role of lactic acid bacteria in gastrointestinal microecology has been the subject of extensive research. It is widely believed that these bacteria prevent the growth of putrefactive microorganisms by:

Competitive inhibition
Generation of non-conducive acidic environment
Production of antibiotic-like substances (bacteriocins)

Fibersol -2

Maize Fiber

Probiotic

Prebiotics like Fibersol-2 are also a vital source of ‘food’ for the gut bacteria. This helps them to produce beneficial substances like short-chain fatty acids, which strengthen the physical gut barrier and regulate the immune response.

A healthy gut also ensures that nutrients are properly absorbed.

Loving this product, from the delicious taste to how regular my stomach has been and how much better I feel.
    Will definitely continue using it.

  2. Shannon Ambrose

Finally a probiotic that tastes great. I have tried many times to get my teens to take a daily liquid probiotic as I’m a firm believer in well-being and health starting with good gut health, but usually just the smell puts them off. No struggles with this one – they choose to take it. I’d definitely recommend.

  3. Nina Dawson (verified owner)

My 16 year old daughter loves this probiotic. Mixed with ice cold water, the cherry taste is very pleasant and refreshing. Her gut health has already improved. I’m very happy with this purchase. Next we would like to try a whey protein or lean muscle builder.

  4. Madeleine Burger (verified owner)

Both my teenage daughters (18 & 15) are using this product at the moment and I can see a clear improvement in their skins. Also no complaints of tummy cramps or a runny tummy. I would definitely recommend this product.

  5. Zelna (verified owner)

I have been using this product myself now for a month and I can feel the benefit. Using it in the morning and the PMS support in the evening. Definitely worth the purchase. The taste is delicious.

PRODUCT INFORMATION

Gut health is a very hot topic at the moment, and for good reason. In years gone by, we assumed that the gut only had one function, and that was to help us digest and absorb food. While this is definitely one of its functions, newer research is showing us that it is a lot more complicated than that and the effects of having good gut health can be far reaching. At Bioteen, we have a holistic approach to teen health and believe that it is never too early to start fostering optimal gut health through good nutrition.

The gut has famously been dubbed ‘the second brain’ showing us just how important it really is. What we eat and what supplements we take can have an effect on the types of microbes that live in the microbiota as well as the kinds of substances they release. These can then have an effect on mood, immune function and even weight management! Making sure teens have the right gut microbiome composition is important, especially when the microbiome’s health is affected by external factors like antibiotic use, stress, or poor diet.

To help your teen have a great basis for good gut health, we have developed Bioteen’s Pre + Probiotic. This combination of prebiotic fibers (in the form of Fibersol-2®, Nutriose and Inavea), probiotics (as Lactospore) and our high quality Teen Vitamin Premix have been specially selected to support the gut through more than one pathway.

Let’s explore how this combination supports your teen’s gut:

The gut microbiome is the population of microbes that live in the gut. There is a balance of good and bad microbes and in a healthy person the number and diversity of the good outweighs the bad and keeps their population in check. It is important to encourage the growth of the good bacteria and where needed repopulate the gut with additional good bacteria (for example when you have taken a course of antibiotics).

Prebiotics feed the gut microbiome

The way that you encourage the growth of the good bacteria (which usually fall into the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium families) is by feeding them the right kind of prebiotic fibers. The good microbes in the gut ferment these prebiotic fibers (using them as a source of energy). Some prebiotic fibers (like Fibersol-2®, Nutriose and Inavea) in Bioteen’s Pre + Probiotic mix are fermented more readily than others, which means that they are more effective at feeding these beneficial microbes.

During this fermentation process, the gut microbiome produces beneficial substances called short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) as the byproduct. SCFAs act as an energy source for the cells of the colon, keeping them healthy and also strengthening the gut barrier helping to protect the host from future pathogenic infections. They do this in 3 main ways: they increase the secretion of mucus, act as an energy source for epithelial cells and maintain tight junction proteins (1). A thicker mucus layer blocks pathogens, well fed epithelial cells are able to proliferate and function at capacity and well maintained tight junctions seal the epithelial cells together and reinforce the physical barrier. In addition to this, the release of SCFA lowers the pH of the colon which helps to prevent overgrowth by pH-sensitive pathogenic bacteria, adding another layer of protection (2).

Probiotics repopulate the microbiome

Probiotics by definition are: “live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host” (3). In general, probiotics are live strains of bacteria (like Bacillus coagulans found in Lactospore®) or yeast that we consume in various forms to add additional bacteria back into the gut. The research that is the strongest for probiotic use is to repopulate the gut after taking antibiotics. While antibiotics are essential when it comes to fighting pathogenic bacterial infections, they unfortunately don’t differentiate between the good and the bad guys. This means that the good bacteria may also be wiped out by the antibiotic course causing dysbiosis (which is an imbalance between good and bad bacteria in the gut). Once the gut microbiota has been disrupted, other infections may take hold more easily thus causing a bit of a vicious cycle (4).

In addition to this vicious cycle, there are also a host of unpleasant symptoms that go along with taking antibiotics, like antibiotic associated diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms (which can both affect up to 35% of patients). Although these symptoms are usually mild and self-limiting, they are certainly not pleasant and in some cases may become particularly bad to the point where the patients decide to stop the antibiotic completely (4). Stopping an antibiotic course prematurely may lead to the harmful bacteria not being cleared completely meaning that the infection doesn’t go away.

Luckily, most research points to the fact that we can prevent or diminish the negative effects of antibiotics by using a probiotic supplement to restore the baseline or pre-antibiotic microbiota composition (4). It’s important to remember that in order to get all the benefits from your probiotic, take your probiotic supplement at least 2 hours after taking your antibiotic (to prevent the antibiotic from immediately killing the probiotics) and also to continue taking the probiotic for at least a week after stopping the antibiotic (4).

We have specifically included the probiotic Bacillus coagulans found (Lactospore®) due to the fact that it is very stable and also because it produces lactic acid, which create an acidic environment that is not favorable for harmful bacteria (thus working in combination with the SCFAs which also lower the pH) (5).

The stability of Lactospore® comes from the fact that it is a spore forming probiotic. Spores are fascinating in that they are very resistant to adverse conditions but will happily thrive in places where conditions are favorable (like in the gut). This means that they survive the transit from the factory to your home, the storage process as well as the harsh environment they encounter in your stomach (5). Having a probiotic that is resistant to damage is key because if it dies before it gets to its place of target, it won’t be able to exert beneficial effects on your health.

The bottom line

Gut health is important. Following a healthy diet, eating enough fiber rich foods, and managing factors that influence gut health (like stress) are essential. However, there are times (like when you take antibiotics) when this isn’t enough, and you need to bring in the big guns to help restore balance. Bioteen’s Pre + Probiotic mix has been expertly formulated to not only contain an incredibly stable probiotic that’s able to help repopulate the microbes lost but prebiotics to help the microbes that remain to thrive.
