What you do after a tough training session, aka the recovery period, can make or break the next one. When you consume the right nutrients during this time, you provide substrates that the body can use to repair itself and prime you for future exercise, if not done correctly you are open to early onset fatigue, decreased performance and even an increased risk for injury. Adequate recovery helps you return to training faster leading to significant performance and long-term health benefits. However, eating a meal that contains all the right nutrients after exercising is also easier said than done, because exercise increases core temperature and an increased core temperature depresses appetite. For this reason, a shake is often the most practical option.

Protein is essential for muscle repair and immunity

Protein is an important recovery nutrient because, in its simplest form, as amino acids, it forms the building blocks for muscle cell development, growth and repair (1). If there is a shortage of these important building blocks, these cells cannot recover from damage sustained during exercise.


Recovery contains whey, a highly bioavailable milk protein. High biological value (HBV) proteins contain all 9 essential amino acids, where the term ‘essential’ indicates that these nutrients are unable to be produced by the body, so need to be taken in through the diet to avoid a deficiency. But Bioteen’s Recovery doesn’t contain just regular whey, it contains a unique kind of whey protein called native whey protein concentrate. It’s unique because, unlike regular whey protein concentrate, which is a byproduct of the cheese production process, native whey protein is made by filtering unprocessed milk. This process allows the milk proteins to stay intact and also results in a product that is higher in the essential amino acid leucine (2). Leucine is of particular importance to those who are looking to repair and grow muscle fibers because not only does it act as a substrate for muscle protein synthesis (MPS) but it also actively signals it (*), helping to increase strength, develop lean muscle mass and improve recovery (3). We have also added the conditionally essential amino acid, glutamine, to Bioteen’s Recovery as it has been shown to reduce some fatigue markers and may reduce muscle soreness (4).


Sufficient protein also supports healthy immune cell development, growth and repair. Whey protein in particular contains biologically active molecules that may have a beneficial effect on immune health (5) and glutamine not only acts as a fuel for certain immune cells but also helps to strengthen and maintain gut barrier function (bearing in mind that the gut is the primary site for pathogen entry into the body).


Carbohydrates (paired with protein) help to refuel lost glycogen stores

When you exercise you use energy and the body’s preferred source for this energy is carbohydrates. When carbs are consumed, they are broken down into glucose and enter the bloodstream (aka blood sugar). The sugar in your blood is easy for your body to access during exercise and if this source runs out, your body liberates carbohydrates that are stored in your muscles in the form of glycogen. If you have an adequate glycogen reserve, it can allow you to work out for a longer period of time without having to refuel, so replenishing this store by consuming carbohydrates after it has been used up, is an essential part of recovery (6). Usually, the sooner you can do this after exercising, the better. Glycogen stores can replenish at a rate of 5% per hour, meaning that at a minimum it will take 20 hours for your stores to be properly refueled and any delay in carb intake after exercise will only serve to delay this rate. In addition to the effect protein has on cell repair, adding protein to the post-workout supplement or meal may also help to increase glycogen resynthesis rates and in addition to this it will promote an anabolic (or building up) hormonal profile (7).


Fluid and electrolytes rehydrate 

Exercising muscles generate heat and this heat needs to be transferred to the environment to prevent overheating. The body does this by circulating blood to the extremities and allowing heat to escape to the environment through convection and through sweat. When you sweat, you lose water and depending on the condition, the amount of water lost can be quite significant. As humans don’t have the capacity to store water for long periods of time, water that is lost needs to be replaced to prevent symptoms of dehydration. Some symptoms of dehydration include irritability, inability to concentrate, fatigue and a headache. Sweat also contains electrolytes, like sodium and potassium, which then need to be replaced. Electrolytes are minerals that are dissolved in your body’s fluids that help to regulate fluid retention (8). Bioteen’s Recovery is a ready to mix drink that when mixed with water as per the instructions can form part of a rehydration strategy after an exercise session.
